“First Run” Awards

Posted on March 29, 2011 at 11:00 am by Ryan Patch

As you may have heard, “Sheol” had it’s first public screening at NYU’s First Run Film Festival this past weekend, and it was received with great aplomb.  We were honored with several awards from our screening block:

Audience Choice Award

“Sheol” was the audience’s favorite film!  This means a ton to us – thank you!  Read about it on the First Run Blog.

Producing Award – Ryan Patch & Adam Raichilson

Special Commendation for Cinematography – Andrew Michael Ellis

Special Commendation for Production Design – Gian Marco LoForte & Carmen Cardenas

Original Score Award – Sam Estes

This is truly exciting to have the film received with such open arms, and for the people who worked so hard creating the world of “Sheol” receive recognition!  We eagerly await the Wasserman Finalists and Awards to be announced on Monday, April 4th, and hope we get some festival-wide awards!

A special thanks to the 75+ people who came out to support and see “Sheol”, it means the world to us!

Come to see “Sheol” premiere @ NYU’s First Run

Hello, devoted Sheolians.  I wanted to personally invite you all to the first ever public screening of “Sheol”, which will be taking place at NYU’s First Run Film festival, on Saturday, March 26th, 8pm. It’s a great time spot, and so we’re hoping to pack the theater out with the “Sheol” family of cast, crew, fans and supporters, and would be honored if you came, cheered, and then hit the afterparty (details to follow) with us to catch up with everyone!

This event is open to all and cheap ($6 or so for a ticket to see 5 short films), and we’d love to see you come out for the movie!

Check out and RSVP to the official Facebook event page here, and the film’s First Run page here. Hope to see everyone there!

Premiere Schedule Announced!

Hey Sheolians -

The question has been asked numerous times: “So, when can we see the film?”  Now, finally, I have an answer.

Saturday, March 26th at 8:00pm.

We got one of the best, prime spots in NYU’s First Run Festival, Saturday night, and I hope that everyone will be able to come out and see the film.  We’ll be screening with and around some great films, including my friend Jac Graminga’s “Infallable” in our block, and directly after our block at 10pm,  a film I’ve been dying to see – Ruth Du’s “SIX ’55″ about Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl”.

More details will be posted as they become available, including info about the party we’ll have afterward.  But in the meantime, block out your schedules for that night, and watch www.firstrunfestival.com which (I’m told) will have more information next week.

Everything is (still) classer in French – unfortunately

How can you fault them when they reject you in French?

RE : Présentation du film : THE SHEOL EXPRESS

Madame, Monsieur,

We’re beginning the long, hard trek into film festival submission territory.  My friend Gregg Helvey, director of the Academy-Award winning “Kavi”, sent me an Excel spreadsheet with over 300 festivals to consider, and I’m working from information on http://www.britfilms.com/festivals, and http://www.indiewire.com/festival/browse/.

Check these sites out if you’re submitting to a festival!

Nous essayerons dans la mesure du possible de donner des réponses à tous les candidats avant la conférence de presse.

Suspicious Purchase #3…

Posted on February 13, 2011 at 5:17 pm by Ryan Patch

I just finished doing taxes for Sheol Express’s 2010 year, and was reminded of about $60 of purchases we made at the beginning of this year.

FBI Watchlist Materials

5 gallon bucket, rubber hose, copper tubing, baby oil, etc…

Although these things are incredibly suspicious, they also came together to help us make the smoke and steam that’s seen throughout the movie!

Also, check out this wonderful XKCD comic for a related laugh.

Follow us to Cannes!

As I said before, we’re beginning to submit “The Sheol Express” to film festivals around the world, what with the almost-done version being completed last week.

Now, it’s just a go-out-on-a-limb chance, but our friends from NYU who made the film “Merhaba” notified us that the Cannes deadline was approaching… so we thought why the heck not. “Sheol” has been described as “European fare”, so why not submit?  Because “Sheol”‘s official running time is 28 minutes long, we can’t submit to the festival proper, but we will be submitting to the Cannes Cinéfondation, a side exhibition of short films from students around the world.

All Prepped and Ready to go to Cannes

This is what the paperwork to send something internationally looks like.

So, after filling out (in triplicate) customs forms to ensure that the film would not be held for import taxes, and paying a whopping $92.00 to DHL (any advice on how to ship something for cheaper internationally would be appreciated), I sent it off on Wednesday!  You can actually click here to follow the package with it’s tracking number and be sure we make it there!

What’s Left!

As we said before, “The Sheol Express” is almost done, there’s just a few VFX elements that need some smoothing out.  Today, Perry Kroll and I make this VFX chart.  It shows everything that has yet to be done on the film – every index card contains one shot (or set of similar shots) that need some tweaks.

As you can see, sixteen shots await their final destination.  To give you an example of some of the things we’re going to be working on over the next few weeks, here’s one of the most complicated index cards:

Shot: Jump-cut Train Reveal

- Swing camera out more into the tracks by straightening the roof-line. This will make us see less of the train.

- Comp in new 3D train model.

- Atmospheric elements – dust, etc. – kicked up by and around the train.

It’s been a long journey, but Perry, Bryce and Vlad, our post-production team have been rock-solid and committed to the job, and we shall reach the End of the Line soon.
